Couple in Nature

Superb experience. I instantly liked Dr. Altenberg and his staff. Very professional and super-nice. Dr. Altenberg is knowledgeable and clearly an expert in his field. Makes you feel like you’re in good hands. He’s calm and confident and doesn’t convey panic. He’s great. I’m going to switch to him as my primary care doctor.

EL PASO MEN'S & WOMEN'S CLINIC REVIEWS

Dr. Altenberg is my new primary care doctor. I switched because with my old primary care doctor, I saw PA’s for 2 years. My wait in the waiting room and the examine room was short. He took his time to understand my issues and asked probing questions to better determine what next steps should be. He did not immediately prescribe unnecessary pills. Rather he is doing extensive blood work and muscosketal X-rays. He also wants to know specifically what existing conditions I have and what my parents died of which will also help him. His office staff have been very helpful on the phone and in the office. I highly recommend Dr. Altenberg and his great staff.

Vasectomy in El Paso, TX

WHAT IS A VASECTOMY?

A vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure performed on males as an effective and safe method for the prevention of unwanted pregnancies. Generally a quick outpatient procedure, a vasectomy essentially disconnects or blocks the vas deferens, preventing sperm from entering semen before ejaculation. Vasectomy procedures are highly effective birth control measures, second only to abstinence. Committed to providing surgical care in the most minimally invasive way possible, Dr. Leo Altenberg offers the vasectomy procedure to men throughout El Paso. For more information on getting a vasectomy, please call our office located in El Paso, TX.

HOW IS A VASECTOMY PERFORMED?

Vasectomy copy.jpg

At our clinic, Dr. Altenberg performs vasectomies by severing the vas deferens, thereby stopping sperm from entering the semen. Before this minor procedure, he will evaluate your health and discuss the procedure to determine if you are an ideal candidate. If you're uncertain about the permanent nature of a vasectomy, it's worth considering other contraception options, as vasectomies are not recommended for those with chronic testicular pain or disease. The procedure itself involves a local anesthetic for minimal discomfort, takes about 30 minutes, and is done in our office. After numbing the area, Dr. Altenberg makes a small incision in the scrotum to access and seal the vas deferens. The incision is then stitched up, and you can return home the same day, as it's an outpatient procedure.

WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT AFTER A VASECTOMY?

Recovery after a vasectomy typically involves resting for 24-48 hours, avoiding strenuous activities for a week, and managing mild pain and swelling with over-the-counter pain relievers and ice packs. Keep the surgical site clean and wear supportive underwear. Avoid sexual activity for at least a week and use alternative contraception until a follow-up semen analysis confirms the absence of sperm, which can take several weeks to months. Watch for signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge, and contact your doctor if they occur. Most men fully recover within a week, but emotional adjustments may vary, and it’s important to discuss any concerns with a healthcare professional.

AM I A CANDIDATE FOR A VASECTOMY?

Considering a vasectomy is a positive step toward taking control of your family planning. You might be an ideal candidate if you are confident that you do not want to have children in the future. This procedure is great for men in stable relationships where both partners agree on permanent contraception. Candidates for a vasectomy should

understand and accept the minor risks and potential complications associated with the procedure, though these are rare. With a vasectomy, you can enjoy peace of mind knowing that you have chosen a highly effective form of birth control.
